In the Brazilian rainforest is an area called "Terra Preta de Indio," which means dark earth. While Amazionian soils are known for low nutrient count due to leaching from the rains, researchers found Terra Preta to be highly fertile and with high rates of nutrient retention. These soils were found to contain significant amounts of charcoal that date back to 2500 BP.
Scientist have studied the benefits of applying charcoal to soils and have found three key benefits:
Soil carbon constitutes 82% of the globes total carbon level (Watson et al., 2000). Organic matter made into biochar stores this carbon from being released into our atmosphere for thousands of years.
Biochar retains nutrient at the topsoil layers (Lehmann et al., 2003), decreasing fertilizer runoff that pollutes our water systems and decreasing fertilizer costs for farmers
SOIL BIOLOGY ENHANCEMENT
Biochar provides a long lasting food source for soil bacteria, and a habitat for mycelium, increasing nutrient accessibility and distribution to roots.
While significant university research supports the benefits of biochar, there are few examples of large-scale implementation. Sanoma County is the only example of an extensive county-wide biochar project in the United States. The ability to model coordinated production of small producers or integrating scaled production into existing waste management systems could serve as a catalyst for cities and counties to organize around efficient and effective biochar manufacturing.
For scale to occur production models—large or small—will need to be understood by material and situation. The most effective method for generating biochar in a forest will not be the same as processing urban wood waste. Likewise, methods of production vary depending on a material’s moisture content, size, and density. There is a need to profile models to provide the public with a way to select the option best suited for their needs.
